Review of The Witch (2016) by Dking234 — 27 Feb 2016
I went to see this based on the user reviews here. I honestly don't know what all these other lovely folks saw that I didn't, but this is a genuinely awful movie. And it certainly doesn't qualify as horror.
It plods along from one happening to the next and never really resolves. Let me save you the trouble: an ultra-religious family is banned from their community and goes to live alone. Bad things happen.
At last we discover there is an entire coven of naked dancing witches living in the woods, who must be the cause of all the bad stuff. After the rest of her family dies, formerly innocent Daughter Thomasin elects to join them for reasons unexplained, and they all float into the sky.
WTF? At that point my son leaned over to me and said, "I hope this isn't the end," and then the credits began to roll. Everyone in our theater guffawed and left shaking their heads. The one bright spot is highly attractive actress Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays Thomasin and whose skills seem solid.
Kate Dickey merely reprises her role as (Game of Thrones) loony tune Lysa Arryn. Bottom line: choose another movie. Any other movie. Or stay home and watch On Demand. Even that would be time better spent.
