Review of The Witch (2016) by Connor D — 30 Dec 2016
I'd like to start out my review by saying that I feel that I watched this film with the wrong crowd, and that I definitely have the urge to see this again to fully have a feel for this movie. Nevertheless, let's talk about my first encounter with this year's very hyped up horror film, "The Witch.".
For starters, this movie is a sight to see, with beautiful cinematography to marvel at. The acting is also fantastic all around. Where my problem is with this movie is it's slow moving approach. This movie is very slow and very dull in several scenes, and I would feel uneasy saying that these scenes need to be taken out since the runtime is merely 90 minutes. I understand that it is going for a slow burn, and it does pay off overall, but I was hoping for a steady moving film. By the end of the film I realized that all of this was worth it.
With all of this said, "The Witch" is without a doubt a polarizing film that I am on the fence about. I'm not sure if I love it more than I hate it or vice versa. It seems that I will have to find out my second time around with this film. For now, however, I would recommend this film to people curious about it, but just know going in that this film probably isn't going to be what is expected of it. It is more of a drama that has quick haunting scenes that will stick in your mind well after leaving the cinemas. 7.7/10.
