Review of The Witch (2016) by Ross E — 06 Jul 2018
The reviews for this movie are absolutely HILARIOUS. Much like "Hereditary, which came out in 2018, and is a movie that delves into horror in a different way than mainstream films do, I guess it's only natural that casual audiences will dismiss this film because it wasn't a gorefest, didn't have typical jumpscares, and was maybe just a bit too artistic for them to understand.
This movie really is a marvel, and was definitely not made for the casual audience in mind, but for the trained and artistically appreciative, this picture is a real treat. It holds a creepy mood all throughout and doesn't let up.
My favorite scene is at the beginning of the movie, the family just left town, and there's a wideshot of the family around a fire, with nothing but the blackness of woods around them. It's so foreboding and chilling, just SOMETHING about that shot.
It's like you know something is out there just waiting. Truly phenomenal stuff, and very underrated by audiences. Even the critics who gave it a positive review probably don't truly understand the finer aspects of this films artistry.
