Review of The Winter Guest (1997) by Franz P — 21 Oct 2012
If you are the type of person that is so tired of movies being so FORMULAIC, this will be a good one for you. It is not your usual movie - It is a drama, but has a few funny bits thrown in just at the right time.
It takes place during a Winter in Scotland that is so cold... I have no idea how, but the cold feeling was captured in the entire film. Explaining this is far more than difficult, so you will just have to experience it for yourself.
As you can see it was written and directed by Alan Rickman. Funny that "Die Hard" was on last night; thinking of his "Hans Gruber" character vs. this film - complete polar opposites.
Emma Thompson is perfect in this ... I think her best acting. She was working with her real life Mother (played her Mother) here... As a daughter and a Mother and the whole little girl feeling though now a grown Woman.
She mentions want of moving to Australia. The accents in the movie vary from person to person (the characters are from different spots). The teenage boy did a great job w/ the varied bits he was to run in-to.
Great to see he had red hair yet he was not cast as the loser, the nerd, the bully, the psycho or the gay. (Not a Hollywood, USA movie).
