Review of The Winning Season (2009) by Mike C — 07 Sep 2011
Kind of a bad movie, but likable so whatever. On top of that, in terms of my celebrity crushes, there is Taylor Swift, then relatively far down the list at No. 2 is probably Emma Roberts. Roberts in a basketball uniform?? Now I'm hooked.
The movie is not the worst of premises: alcoholic coach turns life around by coaching some girls who do not know how to play basketball. Unfortunately, it's some lazy writing with caricatures for characters. Had they made an effort, it could have been a moving movie. For as bad as the movie was, it actually made me sad and happy several times. Probably because the characters were decent. Rockwell is usually pretty good. Despite a few bad spots, he was again pretty decent. The girls are just adorable. Not great acting, but the characters are definitely broken people I'd talk to. And how about that boyfriend? Gag. It really makes me sad how much high school/college girls give to these guys.
Would a team like this win a game? Real fat chance. So to have them go so far as a winning record late in the playoffs is just ridiculous. Before that, would a guy like this ever get a coaching job at a school? Maybe in 1960, but not a chance in hell in 2011. But all that is whatever. This is a cute movie and everyone needs a break from the serious stuff occasionally.
