(1997) The Wings Of The Dove.
DRAMA.
Soap operish setting from a Henry James novel with the set up showcasing the Helena Bonham Carter character who has to be under the guidance of her wealthy aunt, since she's the only one who can provide and spoil her, but that the only catch is so that she would follow her rules which can be labelled as dictatorship, such as not seeing her impoverished boyfriend anymore or her actual father! So she devises a scheme to inherite a dying woman's money by using her boyfriend up until her remaining days so that she (Helena Bonham Carter) can inherite all her money and continue to be together!
In order for me to get into this film, I would have either have to read the book which the movie was based on which I chose not to do, or to see the remake "Under Heaven" which I thought was far superior, since it cuts to the chase while this one stalls or dwindles alot! Some of the problems I had, are that while her impoverished secret boyfriend still has a job, how was it that he still was able to afford a trip to Vienna, Italy! How was it that working for a newspaper cannot be considered as afforable income? How would the aunt feel if she had been dictated to whom to see and who can she cannot see? There was that as well as other questions this film does not do a good job of answering, making the whole experience rather artificial!
2 out of 4.
