Review of The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) by Deepak M — 16 Dec 2009
This movie depicts the period of political turmoil in the Ireland of the 1920s. In 1922, after years of violent strife, and under threat of bloody repression, pacifist Irish leaders sign a treaty with Britain for the establishment of an 'Irish Free State' that would have autonomy but would still be a British dominion.
The signing of this treaty splits the Irish into two factions -- one supporting the treaty, and the other calling for war until complete sovereignty is granted. This split turns erstwhile comrades into ideological foes.
Tragedy ensues.
