Review of The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) by Gavin M — 10 Aug 2010
I thought this was a very good, powerful film. I believe Ken Loach received criticism from some sections of the media as they thought the movie was pro IRA. When viewing the film I thought this to be unfair as it showed the Irish War of Independence and the resulting Civil War to be a bloody and brutal struggle.
The shooting of the young lad for being a informer made for, in my opinion, painful viewing. In addition, the movie showed the limitations of the original IRA, e.g. not knowing when to quietly depart the stage, which set the scene for one of the brothers' death in the Civil War.
In terms of the film's weakness, I thought that the portrayal of the landowner and the Black and Tans was a little stereotypical. However, on the whole it was a good film.
