Review of The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006) by Thatcher B — 23 Aug 2011
There haven't been very many films made about the Irish revolution of the 1920's. Just as the movie begins, it drives you right into the chaos of the war. It's a truthful film, most characters you get to know and love eventually die, so it further expresses the reality of went on.
Furthermore, it shows how the closest friendships can be torn apart by the brutality of war. Although I had a slight trouble understanding the thick Irish accents of the naturally Irish actors, (Cillian Murphy had no problem delivering his lines) it was very effective in showing authenticity.
Character development is great and the film's style and structure are excellent. It portrayed Damien (Cillian Murphy's character) in a way that was very honest and true. It is a film that will stay with me, it was grand as the Irish would say.
