Review of The Wild Bunch (1969) by Ryan F — 06 Mar 2008
I go back and forth on my favorite western of all time, but this one keeps rearing it's bloody, nihilistic head at number one. I still can't wrap my head around how hypocritical, murdering, cowardly (yes, despite stoically facing certain death they're not above using innocent bystanders, including women as human shields), whoring SOBs are rendered sympathetic, but they are just the same.
I caught this on Blu-ray and it looks like it was shot yesterday. Eye-poppingly gorgeous. This may have been a 60s movie but it's sentiments are firmly planted in the 70s era of brave, thrilling filmmaking.
