Review of The Wild Bunch (1969) by Dheilan W — 24 Jul 2008
Violence!
I had no idea that this was going to be so graphic. I'm not complaining, it was just a big surprise. Sam Peckinpah has created a western that's not romanticized like so many others before his. This is violent, gritty, and doesn't hold anything back. Another thing that makes this movie great is Peckinpah's innovative use of slo-mo. It's fairly common in movies now but it was pretty revolutionary back then.
The Wild Bunch gave me another reason to love William Holden. He's the best part of this movie. I heard the original cut of the movie took out all the back story of his character which would have made the movie a lot worse. The best part about his character is that you can sense how much shit he's been through.
Even though there is a tremendous amount of violence, I think one of the big themes in this movie is friendship. The fact that they all basically go on a suicide mission to save Angel really nails that into the ground.
Time to go get another Peckinpah western.
