Review of The Wild Bunch (1969) by Paul N — 15 Feb 2009
Brilliant, classic Western told with a traditional story: a band of outlaws, led by the notorious Pike Bishop (Holden), sees their wild days passing by with age and decide to pull off one last job in the American/Mexican southwest in 1913.
Wanted by everyone, they are chased by two armies and a misfit group of bounty hunters led by Bishop's former partner Deke Thornton (Ryan). Groundbreaking, innovative cinema was extremely controversial when first released forty years ago; the terse, superbly executed action and bloody violence, while tamer, still holds up today as powerful.
Featuring a versatile, excellent cast, an irresistible story, phenomenal editing, memorable music and breathtaking photography, this film is Sam Peckinpah's masterpiece.
