Review of The Wild Blue Yonder (2005) by Baylen M — 19 Mar 2009
Squeezed out after completing the excellent documentary 'Grizzly Man' and in between 'Rescue Dawn', Herzog's presents us with what he describes as a 'science fiction fantasy'.
Using a combination of existing NASA space shuttle footage, interviews with leading scientists and mesmerising underwater footage, Herzog constructs a science fiction fable narrated by creepy Brad Dourif. Dourif is a space traveller from the titular planet, who tells us the story of astronauts who discover his home planet, 'The Wild Blue Yonder' an ocean world with an atmosphere of ice.
This is Herzog's take on the science fiction genre, its uneven in parts but watchable nonetheless. An intriguing experiment which helps confound the belief that Herzog is one of the most inventive film-makers around, though this one is definetly for the more hardcore Herzog fan.
