Review of The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia (2009) by Sv G — 25 Feb 2011
This family from Boone County, West Virgina has some fame there for being "outlaws". ...and for some pretty cool dancing. I have to say this is hard to watch - drugs and alcohol and illiterate and crass - you look at their children in the film ni the midst of it all and just feel for them.
..on the other hand?...strangely amusing as it's a culture this family lives and knows of nothing else. There's little hope to be given here for them - mostly it's just a "this is as good as it gets" message.
There are scenes where the family throws a birthday party for their 85 year old mother who they push aside and snort pills and blow and drink around while she cowers on the couch - then 15 minutes later when she's dying they are crying for her.
The music is great - the message is sad - the movie is fair, and much like watching a train wreck.
