Review of The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia (2009) by Matt S — 28 Apr 2011
Following around white trash for a year sure does get boring. I feel like a good fiction film could be made around these characters, but we shouldn't praise this family. After all, they're trash in the biggest sense of the word. The main family is full of 30+ who do drugs, kill people and go to jail, repeatedly. Even the kids learn to cuss and spit at an early age.
What is fascinating is the hopelessness and the non-fear of death which makes them act this way. It gets no worse for this family so they feel they can do whatever at anytime.
Like I said, though, this family shouldn't be celebrated. The folklore isn't there, it's just white trash, sitting around, snorting pills. A defense attorney said it best in the film, "There's a respectable young man from Boone County who had humble beginnings and he's going to MIT, why aren't you following him around?" As I continued to watch, this was the only thought that circled my mind.
