Review of The Wicker Man (2006) by Wendy J — 31 Mar 2012
This kind of stuff might be great for 1970's Scottish cinema, but it doesn't quite fly right with modern day America... I had the chance to watch the original years ago IFC, I passed on it and now I wish I hadn't so I could actually compare the two... Can't find the original now and it bothers me so... Nicolas Cage is pretty stiff and the story while intriguing is somewhat silly. A California cop investigating the disappearance of a child on a secluded island run by women? Add to that Cage riding a bicycle looks silly, beating up women and dressing like a bear... Like I said, this kind of stuff might be all great for 70's Scottland but I think something was lost in translation... Also, I watched the version with the "shocking alternate ending", definite way to go. I saw the not so shocking ending and I have to say, if I'd seen the theaterical ending first I'd been really dissappointed, instead only slightly dissapointed.
My girlfriend bought it used for like 5 bucks, is it worth $5, yeah I'd say it is... But probably not much more.
