Review of The Wicker Man (1973) by Buddy K — 16 May 2009
Much better than it's crappy American remake which focused too much on the horror aspects and missed the point. Over the film's short running time Robin Hardy creates a mysterious atmosphere and developes an interesting tale of culture/religion clash before diving into the horror head first in the last 20 minutes or so. The final scene is definitely one of the most horrific horror movie endings of all time. Hats off to Christopher Lee as the villain of the piece and Edward Woodward for making the audience be able to sympathise with the dogmatic protagonist. Great acting, directing and use of eerie Scottish folk music make this one of the best horror films of all time and with social commentary at it's center to boot. If you want horror movies that make you ponder bigger themes this is one to check out.
10/10.
