A Merchant-Ivory production can never upset audience for lack of poetry and visual grandeur. However, despite a stunning cast with brilliant performance of subtlety from Natasha Richardson and Ralph Fiennes, the scattered development fails to build the momentum and empathy for me to care about what is going on in Shanghai at the time.
