Review of The Whistleblower (2010) by Rebecca Y — 05 Jun 2012
The Whistleblower is an interesting specimen of a movie primarily because you wish it didn't dive into such a conventional thriller final act but a part of you don't care that it did. From start to finish, The Whistleblower is a very emotional movie that has it's heart in the right place.
The setup and development of the first act is spot on as it throws you into this very hostile environment where humanity from both the locals and the UN forces are non-existent. The West may be a haven of human rights but elsewhere it's a dog-eat-dog world and those who seek to help unfortunately just become a part of that world.
Yet, you will occasionally get a martyr who truly thinks of others above themselves and this movie is a celebration of that kind of person. Tense, quick, and sleek, The Whistleblower makes for a very entertaining and emotional movie but the third act dives into thriller conventions and you just wish the movie didn't take the easy route and avoid tough questions about the process of becoming desensitized to atrocities.
.. to the point where you may find yourself even involved in some of them. But as it is, it's a very solid movie that makes for excellent awareness.
