Review of The Whistleblower (2010) by Amila G — 09 Jul 2012
2: I found this fairly underwhelming as a cinematic experience, but this is undoubtedly at least partially due to the fact that the story is not in itself terribly cinematic. It doesn't lend itself particularly well to Hollywood storytelling as there is no happy ending.
That being said, the story isn't handled as it should be either. It is often awkward and clunky. The musical cues and editing aren't always effective and the conclusion is far from powerful. Weisz gives a solid performance and most elements ring true, but it doesn't really pull one in.
This picture, and other recent things I've read regarding the UN, make it seem like a somewhat failed and corrupt organization (like this should be news to anyone). The film does illustrate well the fact that many times glossy and polished exteriors often conceal something rotten on the inside.
Trafficking-related films like "Taken" are far more entertaining, but sadly this seems to be a truer account of how trafficking actually works.
