Review of The Wendell Baker Story (2005) by Alec T — 04 Nov 2007
A lackadaisical flick concerning the titular good-hearted con man. The movie's somewhat sloppily made and saccharinely written, but that's not to say it's charmless. Luke Wilson gives a good performance as Baker, a role which at first seems better suited to his brother Owen.
Speaking of Owen, he adds some much appreciated dark/odd humor to the proceedings as the scheming head nurse of a retirement community. Solid turns from old pros like Harry Dean Stanton, Seymour Cassel and Kris Kristofferson elevate the material considerably - as does the cool soundtrack featuring Beck, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Willie Nelson and Jackson Browne.
