Review of The Well Digger's Daughter (2011) by Amilcar A — 21 Jul 2012
Most Sunday evenings in my life have been devoted to watching movies. Over the last 10 years or so Sunday night became art-house movie. As you can imagine, most of these movies are A) Foreign, B) very dramatic C) usually very long D) frequently depressing.
Fortunately, The Well Digger's Daughter is only 3/4. It's French and shot in the lovely souther country side. The trees alone are exquisite to watch. The movie has some drama but ultimately ends up being very rewarding, it's relatively short and no one will leave that theater depressed.
The movie is a very traditional love story based in France round about WWI. However the plot is tricky and full of unexpected surprises. It's also very peculiar because even though it was not that long ago, the expectations, parental relationships and deference to authority are noticeably different than what you would expect today.
While not the most intelligent script and with relatively ordinary acting, the movie has enough heart, beauty and peace to make it a superb film for a good Sunday evening. This is the kind of movie old people love and as expected the theater was like a meeting of the AARP.
Lovely movie and worthy watching, particularly if you are over 80.
