Review of The Wedding Ringer (2015) by Tadesse T — 23 Jan 2015
The Wedding Ringer is chalked full of borrowed" clichés most notably from; I Love You Man, The Wedding Planner, Runaway Bride, Wedding Crashers, and The Wedding Date. Despite not bringing a new dynamic to the genre, The Wedding Ringer capitalizes on a very comedic performance from Hart as well as delivers hard laughs found in unexpected places.
Hart delivers a great performance in the fast-talking quick-witted and rudely-sincere style that we have come to expect from the actor. With great comedians like Hart and Gad, Garelick missed the mark on developing both a more sincere and entertaining bro-mance between its leads. Gad delivers a lukewarm performance which seems to be a lack of range provided from the writing. Sweeting delivers a dry performance even with ample opportunities to emotionally connect as a bride on the biggest day of her life. Both Thirbly and Whelan provide very strong performances but are not utilized to the fullest, as characters used to signify a "brighter day", more on screen time could have saved the audience from the unseen roller coaster of emotions journeyed by the two protagonists.
Garelick spends so much time moving from location to location that it does not allow the time needed for the growth of the characters. The journey taken by Hart, Gad, and Sweeting is so underdeveloped that each character is given a moment to dictate their self realization to the audience with little to no foreshadowing.
