Review of The Weather Man (2005) by Robert H — 03 Oct 2008
This looks and feels like a big budget attempt to make an indie movie. Big names in the cast, Gore Verbinski (of Pirates of the Caribbean fame) directing... And yet the story has only a limited number of locations, sees itself as a quirky character piece, and lacks a satisfying conclusion.
The Weather Man is about a minor TV personality whose private life is messed up. That's pretty much it. Michael Caine plays the dying father, without any of the energy or humour he displayed in Batman. Nicolas Cage gives us a glimpse of what he would be like if he were Adam Sandler. His performance skips from baffled, low-voiced mumble to angry low voiced shouts - just like Adam Sandler, only with less energy and, dare I say it, less humour.
What we're left with is a drama that thinks it's a dark comedy. A story that thinks it's indie, but with a soundtrack and production values that make the film look pretentious.
All in all, a pretty disappointing movie.
