Review of The Weather Man (2005) by Neia R — 19 Dec 2009
A sad, sometimes surreal look at what makes life successful- or not. Nicolas Cage does a wonderful job portraying the hapless Dave Spritz, a successful tv weatherman and failure at pretty much everything else; capturing real emotions and sentiment with subtly and subdued expression.
His performance is complimented by Michael Caine's, who lends the movie a lot of presence as Dave's prominent father. Also effective is the unique, downcast electronic score, which highlights the hopeless quality of Dave's seemingly downward spiral.
The style of the film is not for everyone; most of it being narrated by Dave and his slapdash thought process, but it is extremely effective at showing the unpredictability of life, and Verbinski gets kudos for trying something fresh.
It's a shame this movie was so overlooked in the wake of similar films like say, Garden State, because it is something of a gem for the genre of dark comedy "life: it happens" films.
