Review of The Wayward Cloud (2005) by Kevin W — 21 Nov 2007
Tsai Ming Liang kind of updates his 1998 film "The Hole". Certainly there are thematic similarities; Taipei undergoes a water shortage (as opposed to disease in the previous film), two characters struggle with the problems of intimacy and the need to connect, whilst their emotions, which they themselves repress, are played out in camp and kitsch song and dance numbers, which are remarkable.
However.....Lee Kang Sheng plays an amateur actor in porn films, and Tsai makes sure you see EVERYTHING, including a scene with a watermelon that you might be able to imagine for yourself. It's frequently hilarious, frequently explicit, and frequently moving.
The finale is bizarre but somehow apt, though you won't believe what you're seeing at all. Tsai Ming Liang is a genius.
