Review of The Way Way Back (2013) by Kyle W — 21 Dec 2013
A thoroughly predictable coming-of-age story that grows on you over its hour and 43 minute running time and finally wins you over. Duncan is a 14-year-old boy on summer vacation with his mother (Toni Collette) and her new boyfriend (Steve Carrell in total douche mode) and having a hell of a time - until he meets Owen (Sam Rockwell in usual fine form) who gets him to open up and live, etc.
etc. etc. After a first act packed with way too many jokes and way too much brooding from Liam James' Duncan, Rockwell enters the movie and blows it to smithereens with a warm, funny, and wild performance that is irresistible.
James becomes the adorable charming kid who you can't help but root for, and together they make this a truly warm and winning film that is equal parts fun and moving, and completely genuine.
