Review of The Way Way Back (2013) by Benjamin G — 29 Dec 2013
The Way Way Back tells a simple story of confidence in a spectacular way. What could have been an average coming of age story becomes something much more with this movie. Screenwriters/Directors Jim Rash and Nate Faxon (The Descendants) take a muted approach with their message and the result is a film that feels more 'real' than most others in the same genre.
Sam Rockwell gives yet another incredibly charismatic performance, but it's relative newcomer Liam James who took me by surprise. Without giving away too much, his character's transformation throughout the film is handled beautifully, and he plays it perfectly every step of the way.
The Way Way Back is a strong example of an independent film done right, and although it didn't get a lot of box office attention, it definitely deserves yours.
