Review of The Way Way Back (2013) by Sherry B — 27 Jan 2014
I have wanted to see this movie ever since I heard about it at TIFF last year and my theater never got until this weekend so I rushed out to see it as soon as I could and I'm glad I did because this is easily one of the best movies I have seen all year. Its also the best movie I have seen all summer that didn't involve robots, superhero's, zombies, or other worldly creatures. This has some of the best performances of the year mostly from Sam Rockwell who mixed heart and raunchiness. Nat Faxon and Jim Rash the writers of my favorite Clooney movie The Descendants, write and direct this while also having scene stealing roles and they do an amazing job; and I never thought that Steve Carell could pull off playing a douchebag but he does and he kills it and Maya Rudolph for the first time in my life didn't annoy me.
This is also one of the most truly told coming of age stories in a long time. It has some very funny moments that are mostly thanks to Allison Janney and Mr. Rockwell who is becoming my new favorite actor after this and seeing him in Seven Psychopaths. This isn't a movie that is for everyone the humor my actually offend people even though it seems rather light hearted at the time.
The verdict on this is this is filled with some amazing performances especially I can't stress that Sam Rockwell seriously deserves an Oscar for this movie. I you like a good coming of age movie that feels like it came out in an 80's summer this is for you. Go see this immediately. This is the second movie of the year to get the highest score.
GRADE: A+.
#3 FAVORITE MOVIE OF 2013.
