Review of The Way Way Back (2013) by Scott W — 28 May 2014
It's not as good as I thought it was going to be, but there still is enough to like here. The movie takes a while to hit its stride. The beginning is just everyone being awful to this kid Duncan and him not saying anything in response.
Doesn't exactly draw you in. But once he meets Sam Rockwell and starts hanging out at the water park, it gets better. I much preferred the scenes at the Water Wizz to the scenes back at home. Trent and Pam seem like one-note characters, really not interesting at all.
It was interesting to see Steve Carell play against type (although him yelling "Pam!" made me feel nostalgic for The Office). I like how the relationship with Duncan and Susanna develops, and there are laughs pretty much throughout.
It's decent, just not great.
