Review of The Way Way Back (2013) by Jason K — 08 Jul 2014
It has its flaws, but for the most part they can be overlooked by the film's overwhelming charisma of its cast. The actors nail their perspective parts, particularly Liam James as the lonely and ignored Duncan.
"The Way, Way Back" fuses drama and comedy, turning recycled themes into something interesting and-arguably--unique. I wasn't expecting anything noteworthy, but I certainly enjoyed the humor/drama combo here.
We get a very vibrant relief-from the depressing state of Duncan's family-in a waterpark (of all places) where Sam Rockwell just rocks. I mean it, the guy brings so much energy into his character (and the film)and it never feels forced or overdone.
As a whole, I thought "The Way Way Back" made the best of its script, if I were to provide a summary of the movie, I doubt anyone would see it, and yet...somehow, the film manages to rise above any preconceived notions of "we've seen this before" (which is certainly not the case).
There are good moments and bad moments; life sucks, all you can do is make the best of it, and make/go your own way. That's what I took in from "The Way, Way Back." Definitely worth watching.
