Review of The Way Way Back (2013) by Mike A — 06 Aug 2014
Sam Rockwell steals the show (as is often the case). Steve Carell was truly hateable, and Liam James did a fine job of transitioning *naturally* between personas.
The Way Way Back, is a fun, feel-good kind of film. I tend to get bored with what is normally considered a 'feel-good' film, but here it was not the case.
To be honest, I wasn't expecting too much from the start of this movie, and it was all going a bit predictably and cliche, until Rockwell showed up. His character is charismatic, funny, and simple.
Jim Rash (who I didn't know made the film) was also a welcome addition. I didn't like the tiny bit of objectifying women, made me embarrassed for my gender, but at least it was in jest and just a small part of the movie.
Jim Rash, whom I didn't know before Community, is starting to become really reliable for combining deep characters and realistic drama with great comedy.
Camera use was fine, it did nothing spectacular, but it did allow the script to speak for itsself, and it didn't distract nor detract from anything.
