Review of The Way Way Back (2013) by Ankur B — 03 Oct 2014
Bolstered by the courageous performances of Sam Rockwell and Allison Janey, The Way Way Back overcomes it's familiar themes to deliver the perfect balance between comedy and drama. Nat Faxon and Jim Rash conjure up another delightful screenplay, after their previous success with The Descendants.
Throughout the film, we explore innocence and loneliness. These themes are sensitively noticed in the film, and we are subtly able to sympathize with Duncan. Steve Carell is also surprisingly devious as the overbearing step-father, which shows the versatility he has procured as an actor.
The comedic charms belong solely to Sam Rockwell and Allison Janey, and even though they don't share any screen time, they make The Way Way Back a heart-warming and poignant coming of age story.
