Review of The Way Way Back (2013) by Wadevs — 11 Nov 2013
Sam Rockwell absolutely shines in this hard-trying-to-be-indie movie. Much of the cast, including the gormless, charmless, expressionless 14 year old lead, struggles hard to be likeable. Steve Carrel, for the first time is the dick.
And he isn't convincing. Just kind of ruins him for me. But Rockwell and his quirky, larger-than-life character does stand out from the cardboard characters and rescues an otherwise dull movie. His friendship and the way he fathers shy insecure Duncan is the genuinely heartwarming core to this movie.
And it outshines the other storylines.
