Review of The Way Way Back (2013) by Alex R — 31 Jan 2014
The Way Way Back is a fun, entertaining dramedy with a great cast. The story is quite simple, yet the film pulls off something great by the fact that it boasts a very good script, great performances and effective direction.
The story is well crafted, and it is one that doesn't overdo anything to grab your attention. I really loved the film, and this is one of those pictures that delivers on its simple idea and makes it a memorable film going experience.
If you're looking for a well executed drama, comedy film, then give this one a shot. The film, like I said, boasts great cast, and actor Sam Rockwell yet again delivers a stunning performance, and I find him to be an underrated talent, and he deserves more recognition.
Steve Carell also stands out, and he is more dramatic here than his usual output, which is terrific because he shows off his range as an actor. This is an entertaining film that is among 2013's most surprising films.
If you love these types of films, the The Way, Way Back is a film that will surely satisfy you. It is a film that has plenty of heart, and its cast are terrific in their parts. What really stands out, however is the fact that the filmmakers were able to make a great film without using an over complicating plotline.
I really enjoy films like this because it shows how much the filmmakers can make something special while using basic ideas. With a great cast, well written story and memorable moments, The Way, Way Back perfectly blends comedy and drama into one entertaining picture that is sure to appeal to genre fans.
