Review of The Way of War (2009) by Lamont B — 02 Apr 2010
Let's just think for a minute; what makes a movie horrible? The terrible acting, the poor execution, the disconcerting of scenes, the music, the bad script, the lame action scenes....etc. etc. Let's just say that all of the most terrible components that could be fit into an action movie were in the film "Way of War." This movie was just ridiculous.
So basically Cuba Gooding Jr. plays this guy who has learned top secret information, and the federal government wants to kill him so he doesn't share the information. He comes back to the United States and Clarence Williams III helps him out along the way. Now that might be the plot, but I had an extremely tough time keeping up with what the last half of the movie had to do with the premise? I thought he was supposed to uncover the truth! Instead I see a convenience store burn down, and a bunch of fighting matches. I just don't understand what went wrong. It's like mid-movie the production team was like screw it, this is too much for us to handle, let's just film random crap. That's what it seemed like to me.
So while the plot was just wacky, why the hell is Cuba starring in all of these ridiculous direct to DVD movies? He's just atrocious in all of them, and "Way of War" is certainly no different. I can't take him seriously for the duration, and their are certain points when it's just completely obvious that he doesn't want to be there, and that just pissed me off. If you want to take part in a horrible movie, try your best to make it NOT horrible, don't just give up, because it was your decision to agree to the film in the first place. I don't know, I'm just ranting, but it truly makes me mad. Clarence Williams III is alright, but he really doesn't do much in the movie. I think he's just their to be wise and stuff, I don't know it was pretty unnecessary.
To me, the worst part about this movie was the flashback fight scenes. That was some of the most ridiculous scenes I have ever seen before. It was just completely all over the place. The shootouts were amateur as hell, and some of the gun noises they used were noises that I could find on a Nintendo 64 game. It was just embarrassing, and completely ridiculous. I had to like fight to stay awake, and that's just pathetic.
I don't really see the point in making a movie like this. I thought it was going to be one thing, but instead I'm watching a movie that is just all over the place, with ridiculous acting, horribly coordinated fight scenes, and ridiculous execution of just...well everything. "Way of War" was a movie that might have been enjoyable, if the production team stuck to the premise....instead they didn't, and this movie was an abomination to cinema. And that's what happens.
