Review of The Way of the Gun (2000) by Graeme B — 05 May 2011
An incredible film with some fantastic performances from Ryan Phillippe, Benicio Del Toro and James Caan. For a first time outting as director Christopher McQuarrie superbly handles each scene as if he had been directing for years.
The film is aided by a very smart and at times darkly comical script. The film twists and turns leading up to a final showdown which is definitely influenced by Sam Peckenpah's climactic showdown in The Wild Bunch.
That being said McQuarrie doesn't turn it into a copycat of The Wild Bunch. As far as realism goes there are some unrealistic moments but no film can be 100% realistic. From a tactics point of view, aside from Michael Mann's films I think this is one of the most realistic portrayals of how well trained individual's would operate in the situations they are presented.
