Review of The Way of the Gun (2000) by Walt H — 25 Jun 2007
Blood Diamond ..... 7.2/10 Beyond enjoying DiCaprio and Connelly the movie was a bit too manipulative and preachy. Hounsou overacted, very possibly as directed. The emoting at the refugee camp fence was made solely as a trailer snippet, as it made no sense to carry on like that.
The Way of the Gun ..... 8.2/10 Very good except that as the story evolves the two 'protagonists' display more and more pro-killer and scam artistry than the scruffy drifters the film leads to think they are in the beginning. Just about everyone is pretty nasty with just a tiny bit of humanity showing.
The Sixth Sense..... 9.1/10 I remember feeling stupid after watching most of this the 1st time and not figuring out what's up with Willis's character. Watching it again I can appreciate how well done it is, and if you're not too skeptical, you could miss it. Shyamalan's best.
The Others....... 8.3/10 This could've been a 10 if they had gotten into the psychological angle more, specifically Kidman's. The deliberate murkiness that holds through the middle of the movie makes you sympathetic towards her but it might've been better to go the other way and dig into what she was and why sooner rather than just at the end.
