Review of The Way Back (2011) by Nathan M — 27 May 2011
Beautiful walking-through-stunning-landscapes film about a group of Gulag escapees and a similarly exiled teenage girl is an accessible portrayal of endurance. However, it felt a little too trimmed down to have the emotional impact it had intended for Jim Sturgess' character, ie.
his finding his 'way back' home. Otherwise though, the acting is very good with Sturgess, Saoirse Ronan, Colin Farrell, and Ed Harris giving solid performances. Ronan in particular has a bright future as long as she keeps choosing diverse roles.
The characters of the stunning landscapes of Bulgaria (Siberia) and Morocco (Gobi Desert) also gave stunning performances. Overall, it is a worthwhile stylistic success even if it fails to challenge or grip the audience, despite the cast's best efforts.
