Review of The Way Back (2011) by Gary C — 27 May 2011
3.5 Star movie, 4 stars due to the gorgeous cinematography. Solid film by the great Peter Weir, tells of a group of POWs who break out of a Siberian Gulag and travel all the way to India and freedom. A story about the journey, the human spirit, bonds of friendship and trust, and the drive to survive. Great cast, led by Ed Harris and Jim Sturgess, along with support from Colin Farrell, Saoirse Ronan and Mark Strong. Well worth watching, the film also carries the National Geographic name in the credits, which should tell you about the quality of the stunning photography/cinematography. Based on a debated true story (accounts differ but it is likely that this journey actually did take place).
If you like survival movies, war movies, or Peter Weir movies (Dead Poets Society, Witness, Truman Show).
Highly recommended.
