Whether you believe this escape actually happened or not (inconsistent historical records), Peter Weir's treatment of an escape into the harsh environment is beautifully told. While the script does stumble a little towards the middle of the movie, the acting and cinematography creates a very moving story about the endurance of the human spirit.
