Review of The Way Back (2011) by Xander K — 03 Jul 2011
Their escape was just the beginning. - Inspired by real events, director Peter Weir ("The Truman Show", "Master & Commander") presents the epic journey of several men and one girl combined with incredible natural scenes and setting.
Already released in 2010, the movie includes top stars as Ed Harris, Colin Farrell ("Fright Night") as villain, lovely Saoirse Ronan ("Hanna") and shooting star Jim Sturgess, who gave his breakthrough performance in 2008 by "21" and who is star of the upcoming movie "One Day".
Supporting acts include Mark Strong and Hollywood legend Andy Garcia, who only appear at the beginning of the movie. The scenes are partly dangerous and appear brutally to the viewer. The struggle to survive in cold Siberia due to less food and in hot desert due to less water appears realistic.
All actors have a russian accent which makes the movie more authentic. Whereas Farrell leaves the crew after some time, Ronan dies a tragical death. Only three men survive the odyssey of a walk which lasts thousand of kilometres.
This fact is stated at the very beginning of the movie.
