Review of The Way Back (2010) by Richard C — 20 Oct 2012
The final third sort of works in terms of telling the story that it should be saying in terms of tension and unpredictability, but until then, the film suffers from a first two acts that do not engage enough and a series of characters who are written poorly and at times it comes across as a fairly amateur way of telling what should have been an engaging story.
Colin Farrell, Mark Strong and, at times, Jim Sturgess come across as fairly wooden and boring to view while the Ed Harris and Saoirse Ronan characters comes across as the only ones who actually carry the film in terms of interest and belief.
Coming from Peter Weir, this should have been a great film but ultimately, the result is just a fairly amateur attempt at telling a story that could have benefited from a better cast, writer and direction, and only works on the strength of a more superior final act.
