Review of The Way (2010) by Nina M — 06 Jan 2012
This film was a spiritual experience that Terence Malik and his ego driven "Tree of Life" wish it could have been.
The story is of a man (Sheen) whose son lost his life while walking the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage in Spain, and he decides to finish the journey his son started. Along the way he meets other pilgrims that have their own reasons for doing the pilgrimage and they travel together.
This is a travelogue film akin to "The Way Back" minus the reasons for the journey on foot and the life and death aspects. It's deliberately paced walking. The experience is how the beautiful places, sights and human situations impact the characters and how the characters project their own emotions and pain back onto what they see and experience.
The acting was genuine. The actors took characters that were already very layered and played them honestly. It was an international cast of characters from Europe and North American (yes, one of the characters is Canadian!).
This film is Emilio Estevez's baby. This guy is one of the greats.
One of the best films of 2011.
