Review of The Water Diviner (2014) by Yasser R — 05 Apr 2015
Russell Crowe makes a fine directorial debut in this WW1 Australian/Turkish story.
Crowe plays an Australian farmer, Connor whose three sons die (or so it seems) in a battle that has special sognificance for Australians and New Zealanders the Battle of Gallipoli in Turkey.
After the death of his wife he makes it his mission to track down their remains and return them to their consecrated family grave.
Featuring lush cinematography of Victoria, Australia and Turkey (much filmed in Australia).
The cast includes Crowe himself of course, the Bond girl off Quantum of Solace Olga Kurylenko and Jai Courtney from A Good Day to Die Hard.
I feel ashamed at my ignorance of all things WW1 due to a questionnable history syllabus in UK schools.
I will forgive Crowe for his Leeds United supporting leanings with work like this.
Advance Australia Fair.
