Review of The Warrior's Way (2010) by Joe A — 05 Jul 2011
A swordsman from the Far East comes to the American West to escape a price on his head bringing along a fugitive infant and, eventually, his enemies. Way is a colorful and stylish mash up of Western and Martial Arts flicks that should be a lot more fun then it is.
The problem is that not only does the film have far too slow a pace for this kind of flick, but, has a very uneven tone, going from slapstick and goofy to hard and violent sometimes in the same scene.
Director Lee just can't decide what kind of film he wants to make and tries to have it both ways. It isn't till the last act when he finally pulls it together for a rousing and fun showdown between our hero, his former ninja clan, a ruthless outlaw gang and the oddball townsfolk that have taken him to heart.
Then Way becomes the fun, action packed flick we were waiting for. And it's almost worth the wait. The climax plus a good cast and some absolutely sumptuous imagery do make this worth the watch if you don't mind a slow start.
