Review of The Warriors (1979) by John M — 24 Jun 2016
Warriorrrs. It's the cult classic from 1979 that takes place in dystopian Manhattan, where there's twenty times more gangs than there are in all the Grand Theft Auto games combined. After an assassination of Martin Luther King proportions, a gang called The Warriors are framed for it, and this movie is all about them sticking together and trying to survive and make their way home.
This is a really cool, sometimes campy little movie. It's oddly original; you've never seen anything quite like The Warriors, as it is almost like a Greek epic journey that takes place in an 80's movie (even though it was technically made in '79, for all intents and purposes, it's an 80's movie).
There's a number of memorable scenes and lines from it that you have probably heard before, even if you haven't seen the movie. You've probably heard somebody at a party say "CAN YOU DIG IT?" really loudly, and how many times have you seen somebody drink three beers, put the bottles on their fingers and reenact the famous David Patrick Kelly line? The acting isn't particularly good, but who cares, it's never about the acting.
It's a fun time with themes of unity and camaraderie, and it makes for a good watch.
