Review of The Ward (2010) by Hm F — 14 Jun 2011
Being a huge John Carpenter fan, The Ward is a bittersweet experience. On the one hand, its great to see the man can still put a movie together. There is certainly a competent hand driving this movie, and Carpenter hasn't lost his touch when it comes to action and tension.
Its the story and characters where this movie falls flat. Amber Heard, a bright spot of Drive Angry3D, is similarly here one of the few graces of this film with a strong performance that anchors the movie in a well needed dose of reality.
The loons in the movie are thinly sketched at best, but the movie's conclusion actually helps explain this. Likewise the ghost's need for a physical manner of killing is a bit confusing until the movie's final reel.
Although answers are to be had, its a bit of a drag to get there. None of the other girls in the movie make much of an impression nor even the hospital staff. The movie spins its wheels a bit too long for my taste and I can recommend this only to the Carpenter completionist.
