Review of The Ward (2010) by Drew W — 28 Jun 2011
Despite the very wide widescreen and some beautifully composed shots (particularly some close-ups of hands and deep, dark, empty corridors), The Ward has a decidedly TV movie feel. John Carpenter's return to the big screen feels more like one of the hour long episodes he shot for anthology series Masters of Horror, right down to the guessable in the first ten minutes twist, risible characters from stock and (Amber Heard and Jared Harris aside) terrible acting.
The occasional nice shot not withstanding, there's little here worth bothering with and essentially The Ward is a watered down and slightly less hysterical version of Shutter Island. Pass.
