Review of The Ward (2010) by Tim M — 23 Aug 2011
"The Ward" can be seen as both a miss and a hit. Its a miss because it doesn't deliver the goods that the iconic John Carpenter should deliver, while it hits a cord that is slightly above the standard horror fare.
This film is definitely John Carpenter, from the atmosphere, to the haunting music. It has many cheap "gotcha" moments that actually deliver some effective scares. The sad thing is, that this is something that we've all seen done before, especially the surprise twist.
It really is a shame that John Carpenter didn't bring his "A" game to this one. The cast does a great job, the tension slowly builds like the classic "Halloween", and the atmosphere is just right.
Rating C... If only John Carpenter put his own spin on this and didn't make such a generic psycho-thriller, I felt rather disappointd and gutted that this was not a lot better than what it could of been.
